KOTA KINABALU: Folks in the city can expect to have free Internet service starting from next month following a RM5mil approval to fund the free WiFi project here.
The project approved by the Communications and Multimedia Ministry (MCMC) would see a 1 gigabyte (GB) of bandwidth and not less than 10Mbps in speed available to users starting from November.
City Hall (DBKK) Information Technology department director David Ng said upon registering their phone numbers, users will be able to surf the Internet on any electronic device equipped with the WiFi capability.
“For the sake of equitable usage, users will only be able to go online for about 30 minutes before they are automatically logged off,” he said.
However, they can log in again after 15 minutes, he added.
Ng said the free WiFi service would be implemented in three stages, starting from the City Hall and Padang Merdeka area to the Oceanus Waterfront Mall and Umno building to Asia City, all within the city centre.
“Reception would be weak in shops and buildings as this service is meant for tourists and the public on the streets,” he explained.
Earlier, Mayor Datuk Yeo Boon Hai had promised to look into the provision of WiFi service when he took over the post earlier this year.
The provision of this service is in line with Yeo’s four strategies, namely sustainable development.
He also thanked MCMC Minister Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak for providing the Wifi facility.
