KOTA KINABALU: A heftier fine and longer jail term are on the cards for wildlife poachers after the state assembly passed amendments to the Wildlife Conservation Enactment 1997.

The changes, which are expected to be enforced from Sept 1, were necessary because the existing laws had not deterred poachers and the black market trade in endangered animals, said state Tourism, Culture and Environment minister Datuk Masidi Manjun at the tabling of the amendments.
