Company launches programme to train technicians

A MULTINATIONAL company in Penang has started a skills development programme for Malaysians in its bid to have a 100% local workforce.

Hewlett-Packard Manufacturing Malaysia Sdn Bhd (HPMM) will fully sponsor students for the programme which is a collaboration between HPMM Manpower Japan-Malaysia Technical Institute (JMTi) and the Northern Corridor Implementation Authority.

HPMM learning & development manager Subashini Kaur said students would be trained as manufacturing technicians (MT) and engineering technicians (ET).

She said MT students would have to undergo 12 months of training at JMTi in Bukit Minyak.

“Upon completion, they will be awarded the Sijil Kemahiran Malaysia (SKM) 2 and SKM 3 before joining HPMM.

“The ET programme is for students who are already equipped with SKM 3. They will receive their training at JMTi for nine months and on-the-job training at HPMM for three months. Upon getting their SKM 4 certification, they will join HPMM,” Subashini said in a press statement.

She said the programme had already begun with 20 students each for the MT and ET courses.

Subashini said students would receive a monthly allowance during their training and salary matching their skills and job scope once they are absorbed into the workforce.

HPMM operation manager Azizuddin Othuman Mydin said the programme was leveraged strongly on the Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) initiative by the Government to develop a more equitable and sustainable society.

“By creating a customised training programme, we are growing a pool of sustainable local talent in smart manufacturing to meet our vision of hiring a 100% local workforce. This approach to human capital training is a win-win situation for all.

“Our manufacturing model will help to provide better career opportunities for the workers while helping to maintain a fully local workforce status for HPMM,” he said.

The minimum qualification is Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia.
