THERE’S a new attraction in town. In Ah Quee Street, just a few steps away from the famous ‘Boy On A Bike’ mural, to be exact.
Created by Kuala Lumpur-based graffiti artist Cloakwork, the latest mural ‘Burning’ has the message ‘Only You Can Stop Air Pollution’ sprayed on the wall.
On top of the mural are 10 flexible poles modified to look like giant cigarette butts.
Next to them is a drawing of a man wearing a gas mask and holding a balloon with the ‘no smoking’ logo.
Tourists were spotted taking photographs with the mural recently. They included Yilu Ren, a journalist from Shanxi, China.
“Penang is filled with street art and I enjoy every mural very much. The latest one is fresh from the oven,” said the 26-year-old, who was with her mother and brother.
“People will remember the message easily after viewing the mural,” she added.
George Town Festival director Joe Sidek said the 12ft by 16ft mural was created as part of the George Town Festival 2016 from July 29 to Aug 28.
“The artist wanted to raise awareness about air pollution which is mostly caused by smokers, in conjunction with the Smoke-Free policy at the George Town heritage zone,” he said when contacted.
Joe said the artwork was completed a few days back and would be on display for a year until July 28 next year, adding that it would be dismantled after that.
