SIBU: The beach in Belawai is attracting more visitors, thanks to the new Sibu-Tanjung Manis road.
The improvement in tourist facilities are also keys to drawing visitors to the scenic beach. While most of the visitors are from this town, there are also a good number from outstation and even overseas.
The beach, over an hour drive from here, is a favourite place to unwind since it is the only beach near Sibu.
During the recent Gawai Dayak celebration, the beach was dotted with visitors. All picnic tables, all of which comes with a barbecue set, were full.
Visitors can find chalets for just RM50 per night and RM30 for a half-day stay. Food is not a problem as cafes there offer fresh seafood at affordable price.
An accountant, Yong King Sung brought 14 people, mostly family members for a three-hour picnic at the beach on Wednesday. It was also the third time, Yong went there.
“With the sandy beach, clean water and accomodations offered by local operators, it is a good place for families to have lunch, BBQ or go swimming.” he said adding that it was convenient for Sibu folk to drive to the beach.
Yong, 49, added that with improved facilities, it was “definitely a place worth going for a holidays.”
“The operator has upgraded their facilities, which has better toilets and clean water.
A senior member of Church of Latter’s Saint Day, Michael Chua led a big group of 23 members for a day of relaxation on the second day of Gawai.
The members included touristsfrom the Ukraine and the US.
He said: “It was the first time we were visiting Belawai,” he said.
Before the Tanjung Manis road were built, one must take a boat to get to the beach.
