SJKC Sin Kang headmaster Chew Poh Sung, 58, has donated blood 58 times since 1987.
“It has been my practice to donate blood at least once every three months,” Chew said at a blood donation campaign at the Penang Hospital.
The event, joinly organised by the National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP) Penang and state Education Department, was also open to the public. It was held to mark Teachers Day.
First-time donor Nur Syaidatul Akhmar Abdul Rani, 31, an administrative officer with the state Education Department, said she was not nervous about donating blood.
“I decided to do this after being inspired by my husband who donates blood frequently,” she said.
NUTP Penang chairman Ng Weng Tutt, who was present at the hospital, said the campaign was also held at the same time at four other hospitals in Bukit Mertajam, Kepala Batas, Sungai Bakap and Seberang Jaya.
“We have been organising this campaign for many years and I hope we can continue to do so in the coming years,” he said.
State Education Department director Shaari Osman, who launched the event, said 150 teachers in the state took part in the campaign.
“The teachers who donated blood were given souvenirs and certificates of appreciation,” he added.
