SIBU: Barisan Nasional direct candidate for Dudong Datuk Tiong Thai King took everyone by surprise when he sang a song after his political speech on the second night of his ceramah.
At the end of his hectic 30-minute speech, Tiong, 71, tried to calm down by singing a church hymn entitled I know who holds tomorrow to the applause of the audience.
He said it was the first time he had ever sung in a function and he liked the song a lot.
On a more serious note, he said age was never an issue for him contesting in the election.
“My heart is still very strong. No problem with that,” he quipped.
He also debunked the statement that as Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman, he had the upper hand in the election.
“I have never abused my position as chairman of SMC for the election. Also, I do not ask council staff to help me out in my election campaign,” he said.
Dudong seat is a five-cornered fight involving Tiong, incumbent Yap Hoi Liong (DAP), Datuk Seri Benny Lee (Independent), Casper Kayong Umping (Independent) and Mary Ting of Star.
Tiong felt that it would be “tough” for him to win the Dudong seat but promised to do his best.
Prior to the nomination day, he was expecting a three-cornered fight. “I don’t care about the number of candidates. I will do my best to deliver the seat for Team Adenan,” he said.
