KUCHING: Maxis Berhad plans to expand its 4G network to rural areas and other secondary towns in Sarawak.
Currently, Maxis has expanded its 4G network services to key towns such as Kota Samarahan, Serian, Bau, Sri Aman, Sarikei, Lawas, Limbang and Samalaju.
Maxis chief technical officer Morten Bangsgaard said Maxis offers 4G in over 36 towns across Sabah and Sarawak.
“Every day we keep building more 4G outside the 36 towns. We have a plan to continue to expand beyond these towns,” he said during a press conference in Vivacity Megamall.
Among the towns included in Maxis’ upcoming 4G network expansion are Bintagor, Saratok and Mukah.
Bangsgaard said Maxis had a total 4G coverage of more than 90% in Kuching and more than 80% coverage outside of the state capital including secondary and tertiary towns such as Miri, Bintulu and Sibu.
Maxis CEO Morten Lundal said it gave people empowerment to come home and enjoy fast Internet,” he said.
He noted that more than 50% of the users access the Internet and video streaming via mobile devices because of the speed and quality.
“More people are using their devices to access the Internet compared to desktops at home.
”Internet expansion is only really possible if you have a good network. Good network these days essentially means 4G and Maxis has 4G,” he added.
Lundal said Maxis had invested significantly more in Sarawak compared to previous investments for the expansion of 4G network.
Maxis celebrates its 4G expansion in the state with various 4G offers and plans.
It also invited Youtube sensations Joyce Chu and Stella Chen to demonstrate the fast speed of Maxis 4G network in a live streaming Oculus Rift competition.
The company has enhanced its MaxisOne plan for Sarawak, among which customers enjoy unlimited data from 1am to 7am.
