SIBU: SUPP Dudong branch chairman Datuk Dr Soon Choon Teck says the Chinese community should heed the call by Tan Sri Adenan Satem who had said that support for Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) would ensure that the Chinese community would have more representatives in the government.

“The urban voters should support SUPP candidates as we are representing the Barisan and not UPP which is not in the coalition. Adenan has said that his government needs representatives from the Chinese community. SPDP does have Chinese but SUPP has the most,” he said at its Chinese New Year open house on Thursday night.

Giving an example of this town where four seats – Bawang Assan, Dudong, Pelawan and Bukit Assek – are predominantly urban Chinese areas, he said its candidates needed the support of the people to win the election.

Dr Soon said the people had in the last election supported DAP candidates which saw the opposition winning three of the four seats here and a total of 12 seats for the whole state.

“There are good people in DAP. But they cannot do anything as they are not in the govenment. Government decisions are made in the state cabinet so we need somebody in the cabinet,” he added.

The former Dudong assemblyman said the state government under the leadership of Adenan had done a lot for the communities.

“He has also adopted an open policy where Christians in the state can use the word ‘Allah.’ He had also called for more usage of the English language,” he said.

“So we must give him a chance and bring back our rights from the Federal Government, including matters related to education, administration and finance so that we can be a better state.”

He said he had directed all SUPP members here to go on the ground to get the people to support its candidates.
