Work on ‘octopus’ bridge resumes

UPGRADING works of the four-legged overhead pedestrian bridge at an intersection near Komtar in Penang has resumed after a four-month delay.

It is expected to be completed in July this year.

Penang Island City Council (MBPP) Engineering Department deputy director A. Rajendran said the works resumed on Monday after utilities relocation works were completed in the first week of the month.

The bridge at the Penang Road-Burmah Road-Dr Lim Chwee Leong Road intersection will have lifts and escalators following the completion of the RM6mil upgrading project.

It is being undertaken by Syarikat Ensignia Construction Sdn Bhd as a corporate social responsibility project.

“Upgrading works started in March last year. In the beginning, land surveying works and utilities mapping were carried out.

“These were followed by hoarding installation, the widening of the Penang Road-Dr Lim Chwee Leong Road intersection and the removal of two of the bridge staircases in Dr Lim Chwee Leong Road.

“Besides that, utilities relocation works and dredging works for the elevator channel are also being carried out,” Rajendran told a press conference in Komtar on Thursday.

He said that in order to allow works to continue, the existing concrete stairs needed to be removed for the installation of lifts and escalators at each of the four legs of the bridge.

“Meanwhile, MBPP has prepared pedestrian crossings with traffic lights for the safety of pedestrians crossing the road.

“The removal of the stairs at the bridge and the installation of lifts and escalators will be carried out in stages to ensure pedestrians are able to cross the roads with ease,” he added.

Built in 1993, the structure has been dubbed the ‘octopus’ or ‘spider’ pedestrian bridge by Penangites.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said the upgrading works were originally scheduled to be completed in April this year but got delayed due to utility companies having to shift their pipes and electrical cables.
