MYDIN Mohamed Holdings Berhad has opened its 20th wholesale hypermarket in the country in Jalan Baru, Prai, near Bukit Mertajam, Penang.
The RM284mil investment on Mydin Mall, which has about one million sq ft of space and comprising a wholesale hypermarket and 81 shoplots, was opened on Friday.
Its managing director Datuk Wira Dr Ameer Ali Mydin in a press conference said the new mall is the largest in the country and is strategically located for the convenience of residents in the vicinity.
“Mydin has branches in Kepala Batas and in Bukit Jambul on the island, but there is a need to cater to the growing population of Bukit Mertajam and the surrounding area, and this resulted in the opening of this hypermarket.”
Also present were the company’s executive directors Murad Ali Mydin, Ahimmat Mydin and Salim Mydin.
Dr Ameer Ali added that to keep prices low, Mydin was importing many of its own products to sell.
“With the ringgit depreciating by more than 20%, the prices of products will increase but our stocks were purchased six months ago so this is the time for customers to take advantage of this and do their shopping with us.
“The occupancy of the tenants in the mall is currently at 70% with the rest to be filled up by next year,” he said.
Dr Ameer Ali said the company will invest more than RM1bil to open up eight to nine new branches next year in Malacca, Sarawak, Sabah, Pahang, Johor, Negri Sembilan and Kedah.
