TAKE a picture and it will last for all time.
Have it oil-painted on canvas, and it may just last forever.
Under the skilful hands of renowned Tamilnadu artist Rajasekharan Parameswaran, every follicle and curvature of a person is accentuated with grace.
Having immortalised figures such as our very own Tiger of Jelutong Karpal Singh and Indian film composer Ilayaraaja, his oil portraits are being exhibited for the first time in Malaysia at Elegance Club, Kuala Lumpur.
While the artist himself was away during the exhibition, his presence was strongly felt in the vibrant energy of each painting he drew, as curated by Batu Gajah-based Laksagi Art Gallery.
Decorated with multiple awards and accolades, his portrait of Laksagi Art Gallery owner Adhiletchumy Natrajan called Bliss is the crown jewel of the entire exhibition. The piece was also featured at the Vienna International Exhibition 2013.
Being the exquisite muse behind a few other works, Adhiletchumy’s daughter Nithiarupini Nagaraju said the artist always found a way to bring out the best in people.
“I have known the artist since 2012 and he always takes his time to develop emotional connection with the photo and observe every little detail.
“We have a few more portraits of my mother in our home, and even when she is not around, the painting always makes us feel like she is there.
“I love the paintings he has done of my mother.
“Even if I die, the painting will live on for 500 years,” she said, adding that her mother had been the inspiration for several pieces such as Sleeping Beauty and Lady With Rainbow Curtains.
From the lifelike portrayals of each individual, it is evident that the enigmatic artist does not compromise on intricate detail.
“He does not believe in editing, reducing wrinkles or beautifying scars.
“He always believes in genuine and accurate depiction of the person,” added Nithiarupini.
Upmarket jewellery boutique Elegance Club founder Datuk Tracy Ong said she was happy to feature the artist’s first showcase in Malaysia, as they were both driven by similar visions.
“Rajasekharan is the first artist we are featuring and I am very happy to do so because our philosophies are alike.
“He is interested in documenting life’s journey in painting and that is also what we try to achieve with our exclusive jewellery.
“His strive for perfection is also aligned with our practice at Elegance.
“Everything is exclusive here and no one piece of jewellery is the same.
“Just like me, I think all my clients will also be very excited to have a painting of their own or of their family,” she said, adding that she was looking forward to having her own portrait done by the artist.
Memoirs Journey runs until Oct 31.
