ONLINE users will be able to surf for free at speeds of up to 3Mbps at 50 WiFi hot spots in the heritage enclave and Komtar.

The hotspots with a login range of 50m to 100m have been set up in a number of cafes, budget hotels, coffeeshops, food courts and the Komtar bus terminal.

There is even a hotspot at the office of Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng in Komtar’s Level 28, where he recorded a download speed of 5.2Mbps while doing a test on Wednesday.

“But the speed will of course be reduced when more people log in. Still, we are happy that visitors to the heritage enclave will be able to enjoy free high-speed WiFi,” he said after announcing the locations at a press conference.

The higher Internet speed, he said, was focused in the heritage enclave to provide a better surfing experience for tourists.

Redtone International Bhd group chief executive officer Lau Bik Soon said the state government was paying them RM152,000 a month to provide 1,560 free WiFi hotspots at 1Mbps in the state.

“We tripled the speed at the 50 hotspots at no extra charge,” he said.
