SIBU: There were joy and merriment for Special Olympics Sarawak athletes at gatherings organised by their two hosts in Bintulu.
The dinner was hosted by Shell MDS (M) Sdn Bhd while the lunch at McDonald Restaurant was by Bintulu Port Holdings Bhd to celebrate the life of its founder, Eunice Kennedy Shriver Day (EKS Day).
The athletes were also treated to a luncheon at McDonald’s on the second day of their two-day trip recently. Various activities, including bocce games, were organised to challenge, encourage, motivate and inspire the entourage of athletes and coaches from Special Olympics Sarawak’s Bintulu, Miri and Sibu chapters.
The athletes also had an interesting outing at the Borneo International Kite Festival 2015.
Special Olympics Sarawak is the local chapter of the Malaysian affiliate of the Special Olympics global movement which emphasises on the use of sports to help people with intellectual disabilities and special needs to develop the strength to undertake day-to-day activities by themselves to become independent members of their community.
This creates a new world of inclusion and community, where every single person is accepted and welcomed, regardless of ability or disability.
This should make the world a better, healthier and more joyful place.
The Special Olympics movement honoured Shriver to celebrate her life as a global call to action for people to live in a more unified society in sport, in the community and in the work place. It is hoped that committing acts of inclusion, acceptance and unity for and with people with intellectual disabilities will continue to build on the legacy of Shriver.
