Widow ‘blown away’ by timely gift

Good deed: Lee showing Sofiah the metal roof sheet to be used to cover the roof of her house at Kampung Tok Sibil in Mukim Tajar.

WIDOW Sofiah Awang Ahmad has received the best Hari Raya gift.

The roof of her house which was blown off by a freak storm in Kampung Tok Sibil in Kedah has been fixed just in time for the festive season.

The 63-year-old thanked roof manufacturer Thung Hing Group of Companies for providing her with a new set of roof.

“I can sleep peacefully now and don’t have to worry about getting wet.

“I feel seronok lah. My children and grandchildren will be coming home to celebrate Raya with me,” she said.

Sofiah, whose husband died some 20 years ago, is staying with her 38-year-old daughter in the house.

Her more than 50-year-old two-storey house was among the five houses in the village which were recently damaged by the windstorm.

Sofiah was in tears when Thung Hing Group’s Sungai Petani branch manager Lee Kok Shing visited her on Tuesday.

Lee, 27, said the repair works started on Monday.

“We learned about her plight in The Star on July 6 and we quickly contacted her to offer our help.

“This is part of our corporate social responsibility programme,” he said, adding that the repair cost about RM10,000.

“We will also repair another house in the same village for free after Hari Raya,” he added.
