‘Giant’ rat on social media sites no bigger than the rest

THE photo of a so-called “giant” rat in Subang Jaya that went viral recently is real but the rat was actually a lot smaller than it appeared to be.

Har Yin Geong, who was holding the rat in question, said he did not doctor the photo to make the rat look bigger when he first posted it on the Facebook page of the Residents Committee of Zone 3 in the Subang Jaya municipality last Saturday.

“It’s just a different angle.

“We think the rat was not that big but to those who have not seen one before, it would seem huge,” said Har, who is a member of the committee.

During a gotong-royong last Saturday in USJ 11, Singam M. had snapped a sequence of shots of Har with the rat.

Singam said if the other shots on the committee’s Facebook page had been picked up, there would not have been as much excitement.

Har said he simply laughed it off when some Internet users described the rat as gigantic and the biggest seen in Subang Jaya.

“We have posted many photos of rats that we caught during our previous rat eradication activities. Nothing like this happened before.

“We certainly didn’t expect the photo to go viral,” he said.

To stop people from exaggerating the issue, the committee on Monday clarified on its Facebook page that the rat was not as big as people imagined.

The committee members and Subang Jaya Municipal Council officers caught 44 rats in Jalan USJ 11/2J and Jalan USJ 11/3 during the operation.
