MALACCA: MCA has commended the effort by a boutique hotel owner to promote English Language by adopting the Gavel Club of St Francis Institution, an affiliate of Toastmaster International.
Its president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said Settlement Hotel’s owner Billy Leong’s sponsorship for club member including providing them attire is unprecedented and should be emulated by other businessman.
“He (Leong) is serving all Malaysians through promoting education and this is in line with party’s policy to assist every citizen and his generosity should be praised,” he said after launching the Selangor MCA Wanita cadre training session at a leading resort in Alor Gajah.
Liow said he would talk to Malacca MCA vice-chairman Datuk Lim Ban Hong to honour Leong for his benevolence in emphasising on development of education among Malaysians.
“This is excellent step manifested by a businessman and he need to be praised for his effort of adopting the club,” he said.
Leong announced on Monday that lucky students from the Gavel Club are set to leave for the United States, Britain or Canada in three batches, starting in June.
The group is part of the pioneer members of the 135-year-old school’s Gavel Club, which was set up last September through an initiative by its Parent-Teacher Association.
The club is an affiliate of Toastmasters International, that promote communication, public speaking and leadership skills.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron will launch the club at Equatorial Hotel on Jan 18.
