Have you ever wanted to visit the places where your favourite series were filmed? With the help of Instagram, a study has ranked the most popular and most secret filming locations from online streaming shows.
From London to Paris to Tokyo, a round-the-world trip would be in order to discover everything on the two top-10 lists. From Emily In Paris and Peaky Blinders to La Casa De Papel (Money Heist), Netflix shows aren’t just shot in closed studios. A study conducted by OnlineMortgageAdvisor.co.uk used Instagram data to look at the most popular filming locations.
By collecting the number of hashtags, the study made two rankings: The 10 most popular filming locations and the 10 most secret filming locations of Netflix series worldwide.
The series with the most popular filming location on Instagram is none other than Stranger Things. It is in the town of Stone Mountain in Georgia, the United States that one of the streaming giant’s most famous show’s shot many of its scenes. On Instagram, the location counts nearly 600,000 hashtags.
Seen in Alice In Borderland, the famous Hachiko (Shibuya Crossing), located in the Shibuya district of Tokyo, Japan, is the second most tagged location on Instagram, with more than 390,000 hashtags counted by the study. In third place comes Britain’s Forest of Dean from Sex Education, also popularised thanks to the Harry Potter and Star Wars franchises. This visibly magical woodland area has nearly 278,301 hashtags on Instagram.
Paris comes fifth place thanks to the romantic-comedy series Emily In Paris. The city’s Jardin du Palais Royal has over 35,000 hashtags.
When it comes to the most secret locations, it is the show about the mysterious Peaky Blinders that takes the lead, with only 204 hashtags counted for Powis Street in Liverpool. La Casa de Papel (Money Heist) follows closely with Callao Square in Madrid, Spain, while Vampire Diaries (absent from TV screens since 2017) takes the third place with the Mystic Grill restaurant in the US state of Georgia, where the series with Nina Dobrev was filmed. – AFP Relaxnews*Methodology for Hidden Locations list: Using Instagram, the total number of hashtags was collected for each of the series featured in the sample. Where applicable, variants of each hashtag were also considered. All unrelated hashtags such as “#Callao and #Bolivar” were removed from the total count. The total number of hashtags per location was ranked in ascending order to determine which series had the fewest tags and was therefore assumed to be the “most hidden”. To find the most popular locations, the total number of hashtags was ranked in descending order. All data was obtained on Jan 31.
