Own any BMW M car and it's a passport into M Town — that virtual and physical community of M fans where "too much is just right".

It's the place for a shared love of high octane fun that centres around M car ownership.

As 2020 winds down, M Towners wind up to welcome the arrival of the latest M3 and M4 Competition. They replace the F80 M3 and F82 M4, which have enjoyed a six-year run.

The latest G80 M3 Sedan and G82 M4 Coupe use the same 3.0 litre BMW TwinPower Turbo inline 6-cylinder petrol engine with 473hp and 550Nm of torque in the standard versions. The Competition variants are beefed up to 510hp and 650Nm of torque.

Only the Competition variants will be available in Malaysia with deliveries scheduled to start in June 2021.

The M3 Competition and M4 Competition are priced from RM664,800 and RM684,800. Tag on the optional Innovation Package and it will be RM58,000 and RM56,000 extra for the respective models. The package is offered with savings of up to RM20,000 when the car is booked online. The booking fee is RM5,000 from now until Dec 31,2020.

The Innovation Package comprises functional and aesthetic features that are sought after and highly-valued such as BMW Laserlight to replace LED headlights; Harman Kardon surround sound system; head-up display, wireless charging, M seat belts, driving/parking assistants.

Visually expressive

The oversized vertical grille is a bold gamble by BMW to depart from tradition and strike a new path.

Its size together with large air intakes ensure optimum supply of cooling air to the high revving engine.

The sedan and coupé have a roof made from carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) with aerodynamically optimised fins, a rear spoiler and the two pairs of exhaust tailpipes that are now a customary feature of M cars.

In addition, the sedan and coupe have powerfully sculpted wheel arches with eye-catching M gills and the prominently extended side sills with attachment parts for the front and rear aprons.

Both M car cockpits exude a sporty ambience and classic M attributes.

From the redesigned Steptronic selector, instrument cluster with M-specific displays and M pedals, to the eye-catching red Start/Stop and exclusive optional head-up display with special M content, every feature underlines the car's racing pedigree.

Add to that the optional M carbon bucket seats and you have a driving experience with authentic racing flair.

Miles of smiles

Both models are driver-focused to the max.

With four doors, the M3 offers performance and day-to-day practicality, able to double up as a family ride at a pinch with its five seats.

The M4 appeals to those seeking a high performance coupe that looks the part with two doors and a sportier silhouette.

And it's a sure bet that the driver of the 4-seat coupe will only have a passenger or two at most on the rare occasion.

Both are equipped with adaptive M suspension and an eight-speed M Steptronic automatic transmission with Drivelogic for the rear wheels.

The Competition models each accelerate from 0 to 100kph in 3.9 seconds and from 0 to 200kph in 12.5 seconds with top speed capped at 250kph.

A model-specific exhaust system with electrically controlled flaps provides an emotionally rich soundtrack.

A bespoke cooling system ensures optimal operating temperatures are maintained at all times for all powertrain components – in everyday driving over short distances and through town, but also when pushing to the limits of performance on the track

The extremely high torsional rigidity of the body and chassis mounting is a key factor in providing the combination of dynamism, agility and precision for which M models are renowned, plus a linear build-up of lateral forces throughout the full range of lateral acceleration and steering behaviour that remains neutral even at the limit.

Customers can choose from three different character profiles for their sedan or coupé. The standard inclusion of M Dynamic Mode opens the door to a particularly sporty driving experience, complete with the ability to drift controllably.
