BREAKFAST for most Malaysians consist of scrumptious roti canai with thick dhal.

Others love the appetising flat bread eaten with chicken or mutton curry. Old-timers enjoy having it with overnight fish curry that is heated up, giving it an extra kick.

Restoran Sri Melur Jaya along Jalan SS19/6 in Subang Jaya was voted the best roti canai joint in the Klang Valley in The Star People’s Food Awards.

StarMetro deputy editor Esther Chandran presented the certificate of recognition to brothers Yoges, 36, and Thelaganathan Gopalakrishnan, 39, who were elated by the endorsement.

Both brothers, who manage seven restaurants together with two other siblings, were thrilled that their roti canai, an 18-year-old family recipe, continued to tantalise the taste buds of their customers.

The restaurant received 1,018 votes, beating 19 other entries to win the award via public nomination and voting on Metro Online Broadcast’s (MOB) website www.mob.com.my

Yoges said the hand-flipped method lends the bread a fluffy, crispy texture on the outside while the wrapping of the dough before it is placed on a hot stone creates the thin layers inside.

“Our flour mixture and dhal as well as fish gravy complements the roti that makes our customers come back for more. Most of them enjoy it with a hot glass of teh tarik or coffee,” he said.

Since the roti canai had become a hit, the brothers have been selling their instant dough to 500 other restaurants, from Teluk Intan in Perak to Johor Baru.

“Our factory in Puchong Utama rolls out 150,000 pieces of instant dough each day where it is sold to all the restaurants,” he said.

The Star People’s Food Awards is a monthly contest that recognises the best street food in the Klang Valley.
