Ultimately what purpose do school examinations serve?

I LOVED exam period in school. Although they were a source of great stress to most students, I used to enjoy relaxing during the revision classes. I rarely sat in front of the exam hall doing last-minute revision ... my mantra to fellow examinees was “if you’re not ready now, you never will be!” Come to think of it ... it’s a wonder I was never beaten up!
