A teen at heart

Make sure it’s spelled N-a-n-c-i-e and not N-a-n-c-y,” says Nancie Foo, the 1979 Miss Malaysia International.

“Age is only a number and does not bother me as my three daughters keep me young,” shrugs the youthful 50-year-old.

Foo is an actress, producer and active committee member of the Malaysia Film Producers Association. Two of the programmes she produced are currently airing on TV2: My Travel Sight and Rasa Enak Masakan Cina.

Foo used to be a prolific actress, appearing in hundreds of films and TV dramas but she gave it all up in 1992 to raise her daughters, Wong Ai-Dee, 17, who is now studying at the Trinity College in Melbourne, Wong Ai-Vee, 15, who is doing her PMR and Wong Ai-Lee, nine, who is with the Fairview International School.

Foo says she stays fit and trim by hitting the gym at least three times a week.

“I play golf regularly, and so do my girls but so far none appear to be a Tigress Wood in the making. I have to work out harder now because age is catching up, but I’m unfazed by it. I go for facials regularly, and I must be mad to play golf so much.

“I go to the golf club at dawn and usually tee off by 7.30am before the sun starts to burn. I spoil myself by going to spas for a body massage,” she reveals.

“Although being a working mother can be stressful and tiring, I have not once regretted becoming a mother. My girls can be a handful at times but I love them to bits. I can be very strict with them but someone in the family has to be the bad guy.

Foo says she bonds easily with her girls because she is a teenager at heart. She indulges them, allowing them to raid her wardrobe for clothes, shoes, make-up and accessories.

“They are my advisors on what is hot and what is not but I can’t trust them too much as I need to dress my age sometimes. They update me on the latest celebrity news and music, so, yeah, they keep me young.

“I was once dragged by my kids to the Super Junior concert which was held recently at Bukit Jalil Stadium. Even though I am not a big fan of Korean music, it meant a lot to my girls for me to be there.

“And yes, every Mother’s Day, they buy me something sweet and simple or make me something special!

“And they don’t do it on Mother’s Day only!”
