Hong Kong singer Steven Cheung is still dealing with the fallout from his 2019 cheating scandal, which erupted after he married Au Yin Man while still dating actress April Leung.
In a recent interview with HK01, the 41-year-old said his showbiz career took a nosedive following the scandal, forcing him to take on odd jobs such as washing dishes, installing broadband cables and delivering electrical appliances to make ends meet.
Cheung recalled applying for a housekeeping position at a hotel but was rejected.
“The manager told me to leave, saying people might take pictures of me and make all sorts of allegations, which could damage the hotel’s reputation,” he said.
The singer also revealed that he has accumulated more than HK$1mil (RM518,742) in debt and once approached a finance company in Mong Kok for a loan, only to be turned away.
“When they saw my name, they immediately decided not to lend me any money,” he lamented.
On his biggest regret following the scandal, Cheung said it was an impulsive remark he made sarcastically.
At the time, a reporter asked whether he was a sex addict, and in response, the former Boyz member jokingly responded: “Perhaps I have that problem.”
“It was only a joke I made to ease the awkward situation. I never deliberately wanted people to think I meant it.
“Those words have caused me the greatest pain over the past years. Each time I saw a headline saying, ‘Steven Cheung is a sex addict’, it hurt,” he said.
Cheung also spoke about his wife Au, who occasionally takes to social media to vent her frustrations about him.
Last year, she publicly called out Cheung for accusing her of causing him to lose a job opportunity in mainland China.
She has also threatened to divorce him on multiple occasions, though the split never materialised.
Despite her outbursts, Cheung, who shares four sons with Au, said he wouldn’t stop her from going online to criticise him.
He also reiterated that he would not divorce his wife, regardless of how many people urging them to separate.
“I believe a family is only complete when there are parents and children. No matter how difficult things get, I don’t want my children to grow up in a single-parent household,” he said.
