Since launching his music career two decades ago, Malaysian singer-songwriter Faizal Tahir has built a reputation as one of the country’s most accomplished artistes.
A multiple-time winner at the Anugerah Industri Muzik (AIM), Malaysia’s equivalent of the Grammy Awards, the 47-year-old has also carved out a successful career behind the scenes.
He runs Faithful Music, a production studio which is home to artistes including Aziz Harun, Hannah Delisha and Aizat Amdan.
Beyond music, he is also the driving force behind charity movement iamFaithmen, which supports underprivileged communities.
Yet despite his achievements as an artiste, mentor and philanthropist, Faizal has never been interested in societal recognition.
During a recent interview in Kuala Lumpur, the singer addressed public opinion that he deserves a Datuk title for his contributions to the local music industry.
“I’ve never been one to do things for the sake of awards or recognition. My priority is my craft,” he said.
The Gemuruh hitmaker stressed that his stance was not meant to belittle or dismiss the title.
Rather, he simply does not see it as something he needs to pursue.
“I accept it if people feel I deserve it, but it’s not something I’m working towards.
“If the opportunity comes, then I’ll treat it as a bonus and motivation for me to keep doing my best,” he added.
For Faizal, his focus remains on what he can contribute through his music – a philosophy that will take centre stage at his upcoming concert at Unifi Arena, Bukit Jalil in Kuala Lumpur on Oct 3.
Titled Suara Rakyat, the show will feature more than 20 songs and carry a message of unity, encouraging Malaysians to stand together and defend the country.
The concert holds particular significance for Faizal, whose song Aku Berjanji was chosen as the official theme song for this year’s National Day and Malaysia Day celebrations.
“Patriotic songs were a major factor behind my decision to hold the Suara Rakyat concert.
“What I can contribute as a Malaysian who has spent 20 years in showbiz, and as a father who wants his seven children to continue loving this country, is by making music,” he said.
The upcoming concert will also see Faizal reunite with his former nasyid group Mirwana as guest performers.
“I understand that some were expecting bigger names, but I got to know the industry through Mirwana, so this is my way of repaying them.
“I want to share the stage with them after not having the chance to do so for so long,” said the singer, who was a member of Mirwana from 2003 to 2005.
