A total of RM100,000 has been raised to help cover the cancer treatment costs of the wife of visually impaired Penang busker Robert Maidin, better known as Uncle Robert.

Bukit Mertajam MP Steven Sim shared the development in a Facebook post, saying more than RM46,000 was raised through a mini concert held at Jit Sin Independent High School, while he contributed the balance himself.

The Entrepreneur and Cooperatives Development Minister said the concert was organised within just four days after he learnt that Robert was raising funds for his wife’s cancer treatment.

"People in Penang must know Uncle Robert, who has been busking in front of Gurney for years. While I was in China, I learnt that Uncle Robert was raising money for his wife’s cancer treatment.

"I immediately asked my team to organise a mini concert at Jit Sin Independent High School. We managed to raise more than RM46,000, and I covered the rest.

"Thank you to everyone who came to listen to Uncle Robert perform and contributed to the cause,” he said.

Sim also expressed hope that the treatment would go smoothly.

"I pray that his wife’s treatment goes smoothly. Keep entertaining us with your music and love, Uncle. Keep busking, Uncle Robert!” he said. - Bernama
