Chinese netizens are coming to the defence of actor-singer Yu Yuhan, after footage of him confronting a group of overzealous fans surfaced online.
In videos circulating on Chinese social media platforms Weibo and Xiaohongshu, a group of women are seen gathered around a car that the 19-year-old celebrity is in.
One of them yanks open the door of the vehicle as it begins to pull away, prompting Yu to get out of the car, while the women hold up their phones to film him.
He appears to swing his arm at the person who opened the car door, and a voice is heard shouting: “Are you crazy?”
The videos have since gone viral online, with one clip on Weibo chalking up as many as 1.79 million views.
Most Weibo users commented that while Yu’s reaction was intense, his fans’ obsessive “sasaeng” actions, or stalker-like conduct, might have prompted his outburst.
Noting that Yu usually has a good temperament, one user said: “For someone to provoke him to this extent, this stalker’s behaviour must have crossed the limits of his tolerance.”
Others pointed out that this was not the first time Yu had been harassed by fans, calling for more restraint. People have been seen following and hounding the star, filming him at close range and disrupting his activities.
In an open letter on Aug 22, Yu’s fan club urged his agency TF Entertainment, which is behind popular C-pop bands and idols such as TFBOYS and Teens In Times, to tighten his security. The fan club also said it hoped the agency would take the recent confrontation seriously and prevent similar incidents from recurring.
The darker side of fame continues to haunt celebrities in Asia, with some enduring relentless harassment from obsessive fans.
