Hong Kong singer-actor Andy Lau has been awarded an honorary doctorate by Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) for his outstanding achievements and contributions to society.

The 64-year-old star was presented with the honorary doctorate at a conferment ceremony on Monday (Aug 10).

In his keynote address, HKBU president Alexander Wai praised Lau for being a positive influence on Chinese communities throughout his 45-year career in showbiz.

He also highlighted Lau's efforts to give back to society, particularly through his support for young people and disadvantaged groups through various charitable initiatives.

"AI can never become Dr Lau, as it cannot replace his humanity, talent or the emotional bonds he has built with the Chinese community through his art," Wai said.

This isn't the first honorary doctorate Lau has received. In 2017, he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Literature by Hong Kong Shue Yan University.

Lau kickstarted his showbiz career after joining TVB's actor training programme in 1980.

He rose to fame with his role in the 1982 series The Emissary and went on to appear in hit productions such as The Return Of The Condor Heroes (1983), God Of Gamblers (1989) and the Infernal Affairs trilogy (2002-2003).

In 1991, Lau founded his own production company in a bid to create more opportunities for local filmmakers and creative talent.

His success extends beyond acting, with Lau also enjoying a hugely successful music career.

In 2000, Lau set a Guinness World Record for the most awards won by a Cantopop male artiste and has since amassed nearly 500 music awards.

The Heavenly King has also released more than 100 Cantonese and Mandarin albums, with total sales exceeding 48 million copies.

Beyond his artistic achievements, Lau has long been involved in philanthropic work.

In 1994, he established the Andy Lau Charity Foundation to help people in need and support a wide range of youth education initiatives.

On the personal front, Lau married his Malaysian wife Carol Chu in 2008. The couple has a 14-year-old daughter Hanna.
