The former guitar player for Grammy Award-winning hard rock band Turnstile is under arrest for allegedly trying to kill singer Brendan Yates’ father.

Police in Maryland announced on April 2 that 33-year-old Brady Ebert was charged with attempted second-degree murder after running down a 78-year-old neighbour with a vehicle following an argument.

The band confirmed the victim was William Yates, who successfully underwent surgery as a result of the alleged assault. He suffered “serious injuries, including a broken leg,” according to the Montgomery County Department of Police.

Prosecutors said Ebert and the elder Yates exchanged words after the suspect blew his horn and shouted obscenities at the septuagenarian victim’s daughter and son-in-law while in the driveway of a residential property.

Maryland station WBAL-TV said Ebert is accused of unsuccessfully swerving to hit Yates, who responded by throwing a rock at the alleged antagonist’s car. The suspect then put his 2001 Buick into reverse and mowed down the victim and fled the scene, according to police.

Authorities said Ebert’s car was later located with front-end damage.

Detectives interviewing Yates in the hospital where he was treated learned the suspect had been in a band with the victim’s son. The suspect was taken into custody on March 31.

Ebert co-founded the Maryland group in 2010 with bandmates including Brendan Yates. Turnstile announced in 2022 that it was parting ways with the guitarist. They went on to win a pair of Grammys without him in February.

The band said in a statement sent to the Daily News after March 29 incident that its separation from Ebert was “in response to a consistent pattern of harmful behaviour affecting himself, the band, and the community.”

Turnstile said the group was initially supportive of their former guitarists recovery efforts, but cut ties when communications broke down and he began threatening violence. That band’s statement alleged his threats escalated in recent months.

“We have no language left for Brady,” the band said. – New York Daily News/Tribune News Daily
