Chinese singer Jane Zhang gave her fans a scare on Oct 11 after she fell off a 2m-high stage during her concert in Xi’an, China.

Zhang, who turned 41 that day, was performing Secret Love, the theme song of Chinese youth romance movie My Blue Summer (2022), during the Xi’an leg of her Chase World Tour, when the accident took place.

In video footage circulating online, the singer was walking towards the edge of the elevated platform when she suddenly lost her balance and fell from a height of about 2m.

Audience members were heard screaming as Zhang fell on her buttocks, with several staff members rushing forward to help her up after the fall.

The singer stood up about 20 seconds later and continued performing Secret Love while she was being attended to. She then moved to the centre of the platform, which had been lowered, before completing the song. Fans online commended her for her professionalism.

Zhang, second runner-up in the 2005 season of China’s Super Girl talent contest, reassured fans she was okay after they urged her to take a break. Close-up videos of the singer showed an abrasion on her wrist.

“This just proves that age is no barrier to staying strong,” she joked, before adding that she could not sit down. She quipped that the pain was “like that of being spanked by my mother when I was a child”.

She took to Chinese social media platform Weibo later on Oct 11, uploading a photo of her celebrating her birthday with a cake.

“Don’t worry, I’m fine,” she wrote in Chinese, tagging her new English single Do What Makes You Feel Alive (2025). “I am entering another year smoothly.”

This is not the first time Zhang has fallen during a performance. In 2015, she fell off a 2m-high elevated platform during the Beijing leg of her Bang The World tour, suffering minor scratches and injuries. – The Straits Times/Asia News Network
