Former Cantopop star Shirley Kwan, 59, was reportedly rushed to the ICU on Monday (Oct 7) and is said to be in critical condition.

The cause of her hospitalisation remains unclear. Her 23-year-old son, Kwan Chun Yin, who is based in the United States flew back to Hong Kong upon news of his mother's hospitalisation. He was spotted outside the ward with his grandfather. According to Hong Kong media, relatives and friends were also said to have visited Shirley Kwan.

Kwan, who shot to fame in 1989 with Happy Are Those In Love, was one of Hong Kong’s most celebrated singers in the 1990s, known for hits such as Lovers Underneath The Stars and Lost In The Night.

She announced her retirement from showbiz in 2020. The singer had previously taken a break from the industry in 2002 to give birth to her son as a single mother, later revealing in 2014 that his father is a religious teacher from Bhutan.

In recent years, Kwan has made headlines for erratic behaviour, including public altercation. In 2012, she posted a farewell note on social media, raising concerns for her wellbeing.
