Big Little Lies is officially making a big return with a long-awaited third season at HBO after a six-year hiatus.

Mr. And Mrs. Smith co-creator Francesca Sloane, who has a new two-year overall deal at the network, will write the premiere and executive produce the season alongside returning stars Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman as well as series creator David E. Kelley, Variety reports.

The Emmy-winning (previously) limited series – which debuted as a finite offering in 2017 and returned for a less-beloved sophomore season two years later – is based on Liane Moriarty’s 2014 novel, which explores domestic violence and small town secrets.

A sequel to the book is slated for next year.

The bestselling author, 58, said in 2021 about the limits of conditional love, explored both in Big Little Lies and that year’s Apples Never Fall.

“It’s, ‘What can you forgive?’” Moriarty said at the time. “Even my own children, I sometimes say to them, ‘I love you so much. You can tell me anything.’

“And my children have then started to say, ‘Well, what if I did this? What if I did...?’ And then in the end, I have had to say, ‘OK, you’re right. There are conditions.’”

Witherspoon, 49, confirmed in early 2024 that she and 58-year-old Kidman were “working on” the third season of Big Little Lies, whose leading ladies also include Shailene Woodley, Zoe Kravitz, Laura Dern and Meryl Streep.

Variety also reported that the new season of Emmy-winning Mr. & Mrs. Smith – starring Maya Erskine and co-creator Donald Glover – has been delayed indefinitely at Amazon Prime Video. – By JAMI GANZ/New York Daily News/Tribune News Service
