Malaysia has strengthened its cultural diplomacy with Timor-Leste by showcasing the action film Conquer: Lahad Datu (Takluk: Lahad Datu) at the 7th Dili International Film Festival (DIFF) in Dili.

The Malaysian Embassy in Dili said the screening, held at the Platinum Cineplex in Timor Plaza, drew about 170 spectators and lasted 120 minutes.

The movie, directed by Zulkarnaen Azhar, is inspired by the real-life 2013 Lahad Datu standoff and highlights the bravery of the Malaysian armed forces and police in defending the nation’s borders.

"The Embassy’s partnership with DIFF is part of its ongoing cultural diplomacy engagement, showcasing Malaysia’s vibrant film industry while fostering mutual understanding and closer ties between Malaysia and Timor-Leste, and beyond,” the embassy said in a statement.

Now in its seventh edition, DIFF runs from Sept 25 to Oct 12, 2025, featuring more than 70 films under the patronage of Timorese President Dr Jose Ramos-Horta.

At last year’s edition, Malaysia screened Airforce The Movie: Selagi Bernyawa (As Long As Alive), which was well-received by audiences. – Bernama
