Boy band 5566 and singer Angela Chang, the stars of Taiwanese idol drama My MVP Valentine, have reunited after 23 years.
The band’s leader Tony Sun triggered a wave of nostalgia across the Internet on Sept 15 by posting a photo of them backstage at a music festival in Singapore.
“Prince, Xiaoxi and everyone from Chi Sui High School, long time no see,” Sun wrote, referring to the characters played by him and Chang, as well as the fictional school in the 2002 basketball-themed television series.
Besides Sun, 47, and Chang, 43, the other artistes in the photo were 5566 members Zax Wang, 45, and Jason Hsu, 40, as well as former member Rio Peng, 47.
The five artistes were part of the line-up on the second night of the One Love Asia Festival Singapore on Sept 14, though Chang and 5566 performed separately.
My MVP Valentine marked the acting debut of Chang. The drama also starred Sun and Johnny Yen, a member of the now-defunct Taiwanese boy band 183 Club, as three high school students in a love triangle.
Also featured in the show were Wang, Hsu, Peng and Sam Wang – the other member of 5566.
Peng left 5566 in 2003 due to the recurrence of an old injury, while Sam Wang, 48, is reportedly no longer in touch with the band.
My MVP Valentine propelled Chang and the group to prominence, with the series’ theme song Doesn’t Matter and ending song I’m Sad becoming classic hits for 5566.
The boy band went on to star in another idol drama, Westside Story (2003). Chang released her debut studio album Over The Rainbow in 2004. – The Straits Times/Asia News Network
