TVB actress Kate Ng is currently starring in the drama Virtual Lover, playing a character who struggles with body image and low self-esteem due to her weight.
The character, often bullied, eventually finds happiness in an online relationship with a virtual partner named Adam (Brian Chu).
In an interview with Hong Kong portal HK01, Ng revealed that the role closely mirrors her own past.
“Before entering the industry, I weighed over 210 pounds (95kg). I’ve always loved food and couldn’t resist eating, but I never felt ashamed of my body,” she said.
However, after joining showbiz, she became more conscious of her appearance and began working towards change.
Through consistent exercise and determination, she lost 40kg over two years.
“I still have about 20 more pounds (9kg) to go. I’m not slowing down,” she added.
On Instagram, Ng shared a throwback photo from when she first joined TVB’s acting class and got the opportunity to act alongside TVB star Moses Chan, whom she described as kind and supportive.
Reflecting on her role in Virtual Lover, she wrote: “This role means a lot to me. I know there are people like (the character I play on Virtual Lover) who struggle with low self-esteem and self-love. I want to tell everyone: even if you’re a plus-size girl, you still deserve sweet love and a beautiful life. True beauty comes from confidence. Just like the show says: you have to love yourself first before others can love you.
"I hope everyone who’s ever doubted themselves knows this: You deserve kindness from the world.”
