Singaporean Mandopop queen Stefanie Sun’s recent concerts at the Singapore Indoor Stadium – which kick-started her first world tour in a decade, titled Aut Nihilo – was star-studded, with singer JJ Lin showing up on the final night of a four-night gig to surprise Sun.
But neither was the audience lacking in star power. Local celebs showed up in droves to support the 46-year-old home-grown singer.
On Instagram, Ah Jies Zoe Tay and Fann Wong posted photos of themselves with Sun, whose concerts were on April 5, 6, 12 and 13.
Tay, 57, who is playing the matriarch on the popular ongoing Channel 8 series Emerald Hill – The Little Nyonya Story, shed her kebaya for an asymmetrical black suit and pixie cut to attend the last show.
In her April 15 post, she posted photos of herself with Sun backstage and enjoying the concert. She joked: “The highly anticipated return of an ‘obscure’ singer in an entertaining concert filled with heart and personality.”
Sun – among the most successful music exports from Singapore – was once called “obscure” by a Chinese netizen who discovered her music and recommended her to others.
Tay then tagged Sun and said: “Witnessing your live vocals once more and you still sound exactly as you do on a CD.”
Tay, as well as her Emerald Hill castmate Chantalle Ng, 29, who attended the show the same night, were singled out by Sun during the concert. Tay even included a clip of a fan in the audience screaming “nyo”, the way Tay’s character is referred to in the show, when she was introduced by Sun.
Actress Fann Wong also posted a picture with Sun on April 15. The 54-year-old had attended the show on April 6. In her post, she referenced Sun’s song Encounter (2003) and the Chinese title of Sun’s tour, After Sunset, writing: “Encountering you after the sunset – the rhythm in my DNA is moving.”
Paris-based Singaporean TV host Sharon Au was back home to catch the show on both April 12 and 13, alongside stars like comedian-actor Mark Lee, Malaysian actress Yeo Yann Yann and The Freshman pop duo of local singers Chen Diya and Carrie Yeo.
Au, 49, dedicated an emotional post to the concerts and wrote: “Thank you for Aut Nihilo. It wasn’t just a performance – it was a homecoming.
“A return not just to your voice, but to pieces of ourselves we’d forgotten. I’m still finding the words for how deeply it moved me.” – The Straits Times/Asia News Network
