Former Hong Kong actor Chun Wong recently celebrated his 80th birthday in a nursing home.
In March 2024, Wong, who was previously reported to be 76, was hospitalised following a fall in a hotel room, which subsequently led to his transfer to a care home.
He later suffered another two falls, resulting in two hospitalisations within a month.
While there were no celebrations held by the nursing home and his children didn’t visit, Wong was delighted when the media stopped by with a birthday cake and a bowl of wonton noodles.
In an interview with Hong Kong’s Headline Daily, the former TVB actor emphasised that he’s not disappointed by his children’s absence, adding: “They have other work commitments, and I don’t want to make a huge scene.”
The Condor Heroes star shared that he never expected a grand celebration, preferring to keep things low-key instead.
“Now that I’m 80, the goal is to live past 90 and maybe even 100,” he said.
When it comes to birthday wishes, Wong has none in particular – aside from the relief of being financially secure.
Along with three meals a day, he enjoys the comfort of a private room at the care home and receives a HK$4,000 (RM2,296) monthly allowance from the government.
“I don’t have to worry about food and clothing like before. My children will also send me pocket money sometimes,” he said.
For the record, Wong revealed last year that he had depleted his savings after spending over HK$3mil (RM1.7mil) to help his eldest daughter pay off her debts.
However, the latter “disappeared” after declaring bankruptcy, and Wong’s three other children haven’t been in contact with her since.
Now at 80, Wong shared that he feels healthier and more content.
“I’m very energetic and eat well. My mentality is also much better than before.”
The former actor believes maintaining an optimistic outlook is key to a fulfilling life, saying: “Happiness makes time fly."
Wong takes joy in good food, especially during festive seasons when the nursing home serves extra dishes like shrimp and roast pork.
Although he still struggles with swollen legs, Wong assured that his condition has improved, adding that as long as his spirit remains strong, that’s all that truly matters.
