British band Massive Attack announced on Tuesday that its guitarist Angelo Bruschini had died following a battle with lung cancer.

The trip hop group, known for 1990s hits Teardrop and Unfinished Sympathy, wrote on Instagram that they were "devastated" by Bruschini's death.

"RIP Angelo," read a post on the band's official account on X (formerly Twitter).

"A singularly brilliant & eccentric talent. Impossible to quantify your contribution to the Massive Attack canon. How lucky we were to share such a life together," the message added.

Bruschini wrote on Facebook in July that he had been diagnosed with lung cancer and that several specialists had wished him "good luck" in battling the condition.

"Had a great life, seen the world many many times, met lots of wonderful people, but the door is closing, think I will write a book," he added.

Massive Attack were formed in the southwestern English city of Bristol in the late 1980s.

They enjoyed two number one albums in the UK with 1998's Mezzanine, which contained Teardrop, and 100th Window in 2003.

The electronic band won numerous honours, including a Brit Award and a special Ivor Novello prize for outstanding contribution to British music. – AFP
