Hilary Duff recalled her “horrifying” battle with an eating disorder back when she was 17 years old and explained how she learned to shift her focus and be proud of her body.

The American actress opened up on her past battle with an eating disorder during her recent interview for Women’s Health Australia.

“Because of my career path, I can’t help but be like, ‘I am on camera and actresses are skinny.’ It was horrifying,” Duff said in the interview, opting not to elaborate on what specific eating disorder she struggled with.

Duff then eventually decided to focus on “getting strong” after years of trying to live up to body standards set in Hollywood.

“[I’m] appreciating my health, doing activities that make me feel strong instead of just bettering the outside of my body. Spending time with people that make me feel good and share similar views on health and body positivity and getting enough sleep and balance in my diet,” she was quoted as saying.

Duff had previously talked candidly about body image and self-esteem earlier this year, when she also posed for Women’s Health Australia’s Body Issue.

“I’m proud of my body. I’m proud that it’s produced three children for me,” she told the magazine at the time. “I’ve gotten to a place of being peaceful with the changes my body has gone through.”

Duff currently appears as the lead actress in the American series How I Met Your Father, which premiered last January. The show is based on the hit sitcom How I Met Your Mother, which starred Josh Radnor and ran from 2005 to 2014. – Philippine Daily Inquirer/Asia News Network
