Last surviving member of 'Empat Sekawan' Hon Ying passes away

Malaysian actress Hon Ying passed away yesterday (Sept 4) at age 95.

The actress' grandson confirmed her death to China Daily yesterday. "She passed away peacefully," he told the Chinese portal.

Hon Ying was best known for her role in the beloved TV sitcom Empat Sekawan which ran on RTM from 1966 to 1988.

She acted in the multi-dialect series alongside co-stars Lai Meng, Hoi Yong and Wong Hor. Hoi Yong and Wong Hor passed away in the 1970s while Lai Meng passed away in 2018.

Hon Ying started her career in the entertainment industry on a radio show in 1949. After Empat Sekawan ended its run, Hon Ying went on to star in several local Chinese dramas. She then scaled down her acting jobs and eventually retired.

Hon Ying's funeral will be held on Sept 7 (Wednesday) at Nirvana Memorial Center in Sungai Besi, Kuala Lumpur.
