Syamsul Yusof’s latest film Mat Kilau Kebangkitan Pahlawan has earned RM47mil in 11 days, with simultaneous screenings in Malaysia, Brunei and Singapore.
This means the historical action drama is only RM1mil away from taking over the record held by Syamsul’s 2018 film Munafik 2.
That hit horror flick collected a total of RM37.7mil at the Malaysian box office, and garnered box office gross of RM48mil for Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore and Indonesia.
"Mat Kilau is the fastest film to reach RM47mil... It might just break the record set by Munafik 2 in 2018 (RM48mil)," the director said on Instagram.
In an interview with StarLifestyle last week, Syamsul said: “I have no idea whether this movie can beat my Munafik 2 record.
“To be honest, I am confident about all my movies because I make films for the Malaysian audience. I put in a lot of thought on what audiences want to see in a movie.
“Having said that, while I was confident that Mat Kilau would be successful, I didn’t expect it to be this successful.”
On Sunday (July 3), Syamsul highlighted another of the film's achievement on Instagram. He wrote: “I have no words. Alhamdulillah. The collection for Mat Kilau on Saturday was RM7.3mil, which is a new record for one-day collection.”
Mat Kilau is a period film starring Datuk Adi Putra, Beto Kusyairy, Fattah Amin, Yayan Ruhan and Johan As'ari that focuses on Mat Kilau, a Malay warrior who fought against the British in the late 19th century.
