Chinese-language radio station 988 celebrated its 26th anniversary on May 6 with a fun get-together, as well as some important announcements.
One of the announcements is that the station’s “listening rate exceeded 2.17 million” as provided by Gfk’s data analytics based on listeners in Peninsular Malaysia.
Besides garnering that incredible listenership, 988 also boasts the highest weekly listeners among the Chinese radio stations in the north region of Malaysia.
A press release from 988 reads: “Our number of listeners has risen for two consecutive quarters, and we have captivated more Chinese radio listeners in Peninsular Malaysia, increasing from 42% to 45%!”
General manager of 988 Woo Bee Ay adds: “I am very grateful for the support and trust from our listeners. 988 will continue to provide more diversified content – such as exclusive digital content, live events, and others to satisfy the needs of our audience.”
Among the station's popular programmes are City Heartbeat (Friday, 8pm-midnight) hosted by Chen Feng, PM Wang Night Chat (Monday to Thursday, 8pm-midnight) and Power Show hosted by Jeff, Cassey and Danny (Monday-Friday, 4pm-7.30pm).
Besides these high-profile shows, 988 is also doing something special with its fans to mark the anniversary.
On May 8, deejays Brandon, Joycelyn, Chrystina, Danny and Cynthia celebrated 988’s 26th birthday with lucky listeners at HotPot Kitchen at Sunway Velocity Mall in Kuala Lumpur.
If you missed the chance for a meal with your favourite deejays, fret not as there is another opportunity. Join Power Show hosts Jeff, Danny and Cassey on May 28 at Shu Da Xia restaurant at Hartamas, Kuala Lumpur where they will engage customers with fun activities.
More than just a radio station, 988 also has its own online shopping platform, Shop Now.
The shopping platform is taking the airwaves soon with deejay Sean and live broadcaster Elle Onni, who had sold products worth RM800,000 in one day.
There's more – 988 is also planning to make its radio drama even more fantastic. This storytelling format is the longest-running radio drama in Malaysia.
It just ended its voting process for “Favourite Radio Drama” on May 9 to commemorate its 49th year in producing radio drama. The result will be announced in July’s I Listen, I Choose, I Love 988 Radio Drama 2022.
As for its 50th anniversary next year, there will be a series of new projects. One of it is the actors of the radio drama will have "special tasks" to complete.
