Hong Kong singer Sarena Li passed away on May 4, 2021 after a nine-year battle with cancer. She was 31.

Singer-actor Steven Ma, a friend of Li's, broke the news on Facebook.

"Following Sarena Li's wishes, I, Steven Ma, on behalf of her family, announce that Sarena returned to the arms of our Father today May 4,2021 at 5.10pm. We thank everyone for your concern, support, and love for Sarena all this time," he said on Facebook.

Li made her debut in the music industry as part of the trio Xiao Long Feng in 2010. Two years later, she was diagnosed with adenoid cystic carcinoma – a rare form of cancer of the salivary glands. She had to put her career on hold as the illness left her face paralysed.

Last month, she posted a message on Instagram that read: "I don't know how long more I can last. While I still have some energy left in me, I really want to thank everyone again for cheering me on and supporting me throughout."
