Blockbuster film Godzilla Vs Kong which opened at cinemas nationwide on March 24 has surpassed box office expectations in Malaysia – collecting RM8.71mil on its opening weekend.

The latest instalment in the Monster Universe has become the “biggest industry opening for a Covid-19-era movie (in Malaysia). ... It captured 90% of the market share, ” stated a report from film distributor Warner Bros.

It further states that the film’s regional revenue in Southeast Asia, India and Korea is US$25.2m (RM104.6mil) on its opening weekend.

According to Variety, Godzilla Vs Kong has made US$121mil (RM502.4mil) at the international box office to date.

In China alone, it generated US$70.3mil (RM290.7mil) on opening weekend, making it the biggest debut for a Hollywood film in China since 2019.

Godzilla Vs Kong sees Godzilla and King Kong battle it out – first in the middle of the ocean, and then at a city filled with puny humans – to determine who between them is the alpha.

Of course, a big evil corporation makes the situation worse by wanting a piece of the action.

The film starring Alexander Skarsgard, Millie Bobby Brown and Rebecca Hall was originally scheduled to open in Malaysia on Nov 19,2020.

Next up for Warner Bros is Mortal Kombat, opening at cinemas on April 8. This action-packed film features a number of Asian faces including Lewis Tan, Hiroyuki Sanada, Ludi Lan, Chin Han and Max Huang.
