After hinting of a third film to complete the Munafik trilogy during the release of Munafik 2 in 2018, Syamsul Yusof has been quiet on this front.
Today (Oct 20) the director stated on his Instagram account (@syamsulyusoffilm) that he is in the midst of writing the script for Munafik 3.
Both Munafik (2016) and Munafik 2 were box office successes for Syamsul, who wrote, directed and acted in the films.
Munafik 2 is especially outstanding as it sits at the No.1 position at the Malaysian box office, having earned RM37.74mil – a figure unheard of before for a Malaysian film.
The films, currently available on Netflix, tells of Ustaz Adam (Syamsul) who uses Islamic teachings to face men who have gone off the path of Islam and are associating themselves with demons.
Considering how the second film ended, it should be quite interesting to fans to see how Syamsul continues this story.
By mixing horror with religious elements, Munafik films were first of its kind in Malaysia. In interviews, Syamsul has said that his intention with the these films is for the audience to think and reflect, besides being entertained.
He told StarLifestyle back in 2018: “I have a vision with my films. The most important thing is I want to show that Malaysian films can be original, with fresh ideas and strong characters.”
In the comment section of his Instagram post, Syamsul confirmed that he will refer to the Al Quran for inspiration for Munafik 3, as he did for the first two films.
Three hours after posting he’s writing Munafik 3, Syamsul went on a nine-minute rant on Instagram telling haters to be more respectful to those working in the local film industry.
In the early part of the video, he spoke about people criticising on every aspect of his films. He said: "I have no problem if people don't like my films. I have nothing to lose... to all the haters, the best feeling ever is when I've proved you wrong.. I've won all the way."
