'Doraemon' voice actor Tomita Kosei dead at 84

The actor who lent his voice to the popular anime series Doraemon has passed away. Tomita Kosei died from stroke on Sept 27, his agency said. Kosei was 84.

"Our company’s Tomita Kosei (age of death, 84) passed away on September 27 in the second year of Reiwa (2020) due to a stroke," read a statement on the agency's website.

Kosei started his career as a voice actor in 1963 and had voiced more than 50 anime series and films.

One of his most famous stints was voicing Doraemon in 1973 when the anime started its run. He was later replaced by Masako Nozawa.

In 2009, Kosei was honoured with an Achievement Award at the 3rd Seiyu Awards, a ceremony held in recognition of voice acting talent held annually in Japan.
