Netizens are not the kindest when it comes to a celebrity’s looks. It is all too easy to forget that there is a human being with emotions behind all the glitz and glamour.

Aina Abdul is one of many celebrities affected by this callousness. In a recent interview with a Malay daily, the singer said that harsh comments about her appearance have affected her self-esteem lately.

“I felt so ugly (because of those comments) but I still continued singing because it is part of my job to promote myself on social media. However, I have been growing more and more reluctant to show my face online, ” said the singer, who hails from Negeri Sembilan.

One of Aina’s latest Instagram posts shows her singing her original song, Semalam, in a mask – which she said was to minimise criticism of her appearance.

To the 27-year-old’s surprise, fans were quick to praise her vocal skills, which shone through even with a mask on.

“To be honest, it soothed my hurt feelings to hear such nice words. I didn’t feel like I was using any novel techniques when I sang (Semalam) in that video. If anything, I just had to focus more on my breathing while singing, ” she told Berita Harian.

The singer said that the support came at a crucial time and has empowered her to continue singing.
