'Jumanji: The Next Level' promises even more wacky fun

Come on, be honest. We’re all guilty of scoffing at the notion of a Jumanji reboot.

But 2017’s Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle was so entertaining that it became a global hit. A sequel was announced, and OK, we had our doubts (again!).

But the last two trailers of Jumanji: The Next Level soon changed our minds.

It shows Dwayne Johnson making fun of himself, and it’s just hard not to LOL at those scenes. Anyway, short story even shorter – the gang are back in the game world.

Only, this time, not only has the game changed, but the players too. Johnson and Kevin Hart are now avatars for characters played by Danny DeVito and Danny Glover, which sets up for a number of generational humour.

In an interview with Total Film, Johnson said: “It was the most surreal and wildest (expletive) thing to channel Danny DeVito. When we decided to take a crack at a sequel, we sat around the table, and thought, ‘Well, one of the greatest joys of Jumanji is this idea that we have created these videogame avatars that, really, anyone can become.’ We could bring in any actor. So I told Jake (Kasdan), our director, ‘What if we took the idea of Cocoon with older people, and we apply that here?’ And from there, the ideas just really started coming out.”

Awkwafina joins returning cast members which include Jack Black, Karen Gillan and Nick Jonas.

Jumanji: The Next Level opens at GSC cinemas nationwide on Dec 5, 2019.
