Watch any Ryan Murphy series and you’ll be treated to an array of A-list stars either in regular, recurring or guest roles. There was Lady Gaga in American Horror Story, Ricky Martin in American Crime Story, Whoopi Goldberg on Glee, to mention a few.

The Politician is no different. Apart from Jessica Lange (who already appears in several seasons of American Horror Story), Murphy’s producing partner Brad Falchuk managed to convince wife Gwyneth Paltrow to come on board. She plays Georgina, the wealthy stay-at-home mum to the main character Payton Hobart played by Ben Platt.

For the young stars, the chance to work opposite these established actors was both intimidating and educational.

Zoey Deutch worked closely with Jessica Lange who played her grandmother in the series. While Deutch was intimidated by Lange’s presence at first, the anxiety dissipated soon enough.

“She’s a brilliant actor and extra-ordinarily funny! And when you’re laughing, it’s hard to remember you’re scared. But the first few scenes were a little daunting,” Deutch remembers.

“And once I settled into it, I just did my best to be as much of a sponge as possible and soak up everything that she was giving.”

Platt and Paltrow hit it off immediately when the actress took him under her wing ... just like what a mother would do.

“Because we had the opportunity to be in this maternal relationship, she immediately felt protective of me. It was very warm, right off the bat. So, any intimidation that I had when I first met her melted away pretty quickly,” Platt says.

Other stars to look out for include January Jones, Dylan McDermott, Judith Light and Bette Midler.
