Military drama When Duty Calls was the biggest winner at the Star Awards on Sunday night (April 22), Singapore’s version of the Emmys honouring the best in television. The show won four categories including Best Drama Series and Best Theme Song.

For Desmond Tan, chowing down on raw fish for the series paid off as the 31-year-old won his first award for Best Actor. He had asked to film the scene eating actual uncooked food to better portray his character’s tale of survival, even though the script only needed him to describe the experience.

Talking to the media after his win, Tan thanked the producers, his family and friends, and joked: “I also have to thank the fish that I ate.”

TV host Kym Ng, 47, also won Best Supporting Actress for her role as a caring mother with a secret on When Duty Calls. This is her first award as well. Backstage, she said: “I’m very happy but I really didn’t expect this. My heart is beating so fast, can you hear it?” – The Straits Times/Asia News Network
