The 35th Hong Kong Film Awards courted controversy on April 3 by naming the low-budget anti-China film Ten Years as the Best Film of 2015, potentially angering the Chinese government in the process.

Released in late 2015, Ten Years comprises five short stories set in 2025, with directors Ng Ka Leung, Jevons Au, Chow Kwun Wai, Fei Pang Wong and Kwok Zune imagining what Hong Kong would be like after another decade of being under China’s rule.

Ten Years won the award over favourite Port Of Call, though the critically-acclaimed detective drama by Philip Yung still ended up as the big winner of the night by winning seven awards out of its 12 nominations. These included Best Screenplay for Yung, Best Cinematographer for Christopher Doyle, and a clean sweep of the acting awards – Aaron Kwok taking Best Actor, Jessie Li and Elaine Jin winning Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress respectively, and Michael Ning winning both Best Supporting Actor and Best New Performer.

Veteran director Tsui Hark won Best Director for The Taking Of Tiger Mountain, while Raman Hui won Best New Director for Monster Hunt, one of three awards the hit fantasy action-comedy won on the night.
